Manali in January 2027: Snowfall, Weather, Atal Tunnel Status & Cosy Stays

Manali in January: snow-capped peaks above a Himalayan village of colourful tin roofs, seen from HOGS Panorama in Prini

January gives Manali a quieter winter mood. The mornings can feel crisp, the higher peaks may be covered in snow, and a cup of chai on a mountain-facing terrace can become the best part of the day. If you are planning Manali in January, it helps to know what the weather may bring, which snow destinations could be accessible and what to expect from winter road conditions.

In this guide, we cover snowfall, cold, Atal Tunnel and Sissu access, places to visit, a simple three-day plan and what to look for in a winter stay. We also introduce HOGS Panorama in Prini, where you can choose from four room categories and enjoy food, coffee and drinks at our on-site DO NTHNG – Himalayan Brew.

Is January a Good Time to Visit Manali?

January can be a good time to visit Manali if you want a proper winter break, enjoy cold-weather travel and are happy to adjust plans according to snow and road conditions. It is not the right month for travellers who need predictable road access or warm daytime weather.

Why January can be a lovely time to visit

A chance to experience snow. January is a popular month for travellers hoping to see snow. Higher areas around Manali may receive snowfall, although conditions differ each year.

A winter atmosphere. Cold mornings, mountain views and the chance to spend time in a warm café or comfortable room give the trip a different pace from a summer visit.

Potentially calmer after New Year. The days around New Year can be busy. Some dates later in January may be quieter, though weekends and holidays can still attract visitors.

Time for a slower holiday. You can combine one snow excursion with local sightseeing, cafés, village walks and relaxed evenings rather than a packed schedule every day.

What to consider before booking

January also comes with practical challenges. It can be very cold, some roads may close temporarily, and travel plans can change after heavy snowfall. Daylight hours are shorter than in summer, so plan excursions and return journeys carefully.

In some parts of the region, winter weather can affect electricity, water supply or other services. Do not assume every property has the same facilities. Ask your accommodation about room heating, hot water and power backup before confirming. At HOGS Panorama, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what applies to your room.

January may suit you if you are comfortable with winter clothing, flexible sightseeing and a little extra planning. If you dislike cold weather, need guaranteed access to every attraction or want a fixed outdoor itinerary, consider another season.

Manali Weather in January

Manali weather in January is cold, especially after sunset and early in the morning. Conditions vary with altitude, sunshine, cloud cover and recent snowfall, so a single temperature figure cannot describe the whole area. We do not quote a fixed range here; check the latest forecast for your dates.

A sunny afternoon in town may feel quite different from a cloudy morning or a visit to a higher snow point. Wind, shade, wet clothing and time spent outdoors can make the cold feel more intense.

You may find bright winter sunshine on some days and snowfall or overcast weather on others. A clear day does not guarantee that roads to higher places are open, and snowfall on the surrounding mountains does not mean it has snowed in Manali town.

Before travelling, check the latest forecast on the IMD website. Recheck it during your stay, particularly before planning a drive towards Solang, Atal Tunnel, Sissu, Gulaba or Sethan.

Does It Snow in Manali in January?

Snowfall in Manali in January is possible, and January is generally considered one of the snowier months, but snow is never guaranteed on a particular date or at a particular location. Manali town, the surrounding hills and higher destinations can have very different conditions.

Snow around HOGS Panorama, Manali, as filmed by a guest. Snowfall is never guaranteed on any date.

Snow in Manali town

Manali town may receive snowfall during winter weather systems, but it can also stay snow-free while higher areas have snow. If seeing snow is the main reason for your trip, do not book on the assumption that the town will be covered when you arrive.

Snow at higher locations

Solang Valley, Gulaba, Kothi, Sethan and the areas around Atal Tunnel and Sissu may offer opportunities to see snow, depending on recent weather and access. These places are not interchangeable: they have different routes, elevations and road conditions.

How to track snowfall

  • Check the latest IMD forecast rather than relying only on old photographs or social media posts.
  • Look for official road and traffic updates before leaving your accommodation.
  • Ask locally about current access, but follow official restrictions if advice differs.
  • Keep an alternative plan in town in case a snow route is closed.
  • Do not drive onto snow-covered or icy roads unless the route is open and your vehicle and driver are suitable for the conditions.

Atal Tunnel, Sissu, Solang and Rohtang in January: What's Open?

There is no fixed winter opening guarantee for any route around Manali. Atal Tunnel, Sissu, Solang, Rohtang, Gulaba, Kothi and the Hampta side can all be affected by snow, road conditions, traffic controls and official decisions.

Atal Tunnel and Sissu

The Atal Tunnel route may remain accessible during parts of winter, but access can be restricted or suspended after heavy snowfall or when authorities consider conditions unsafe. Roads beyond the tunnel towards Sissu can also be affected.

Check HP Police and Kullu or Lahaul-Spiti district administration updates on the day you plan to travel. Do not assume a route is open because it was open the previous day.

Solang Valley

Solang Valley is a popular winter excursion from Manali. Snow conditions and activities such as skiing or snow tubing depend on snowfall, operating conditions and the availability of local providers. Ask about equipment, instruction and suitability before paying for any activity.

Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass is normally closed to regular tourist traffic in winter because of heavy snow and road conditions. Do not plan a January visit to Rohtang as part of a standard itinerary. Check official updates and do not attempt to travel beyond a closure point.

Gulaba, Kothi, Hampta side and Sethan

Gulaba and Kothi are places visitors may consider for winter scenery when access is permitted. The Hampta side and Sethan can also see winter snow, but road access depends on conditions and local restrictions.

Sethan and Hamta Valley feature in our longer Hidden Manali with HOGS itinerary. Access and suitability for your dates are confirmed with you before booking.

Things to Do in Manali in January

You can enjoy Manali in January even if you do not spend every day chasing snow. Mix one weather-dependent snow outing with local sightseeing, cafés and time to relax indoors.

  • Plan a snow day: Visit Solang or another accessible snow location only after checking road status.
  • Try a skiing lesson: Ask local providers whether beginner lessons and suitable conditions are available on your dates.
  • Visit Hadimba Temple: Explore the temple and surrounding forest, subject to access and weather.
  • Explore Old Manali: Spend time around its lanes and cafés; check opening days and hours during your visit.
  • Visit Vashisht: Explore the village and its hot springs, following local guidance.
  • Enjoy a slow café day at DO NTHNG: Artisan coffee, a signature shake or a meal at our on-site café and bar.
  • Take a jacuzzi evening: Guests in the Private Jacuzzi Suite can enjoy the in-room jacuzzi beside the king bed, with a mountain view.
  • Walk through a village: Choose a short local walk only when paths are safe.
  • Take winter photographs: Look for changing light on the peaks without stepping into restricted areas.

A 3-Day Manali in January Plan

A three-day plan works best when you keep the snow day flexible and avoid trying to visit every destination. Here is a simple outline for guests staying at HOGS Panorama in Prini.

Day 1: Arrive, Explore Old Manali and Enjoy a Café Evening

Arrive in Manali, travel to HOGS Panorama and check in from 2:00 PM. Take time to settle in after your journey. Head to DO NTHNG for coffee, brunch or a relaxed meal. Later, if weather and access allow, explore Old Manali or visit Hadimba Temple. Keep the afternoon short if you travelled overnight.

Return for an easy evening on the mountain-view terrace at DO NTHNG, with prayer flags, fairy lights and lanterns.

Day 2: Snow Excursion, Jacuzzi and Dinner

Choose one main outing based on the latest road status. Solang Valley may be an option if the road is open and conditions are suitable. Atal Tunnel and Sissu should only be considered if the authorities permit travel and the route is safe. Gulaba, Kothi or Sethan may be alternatives depending on access. Do not decide on the route until you have checked current local and official guidance.

Return to HOGS Panorama with time to relax. Guests in the Private Jacuzzi Suite can enjoy the in-room jacuzzi beside the king bed, with mountain views. Finish the day with dinner or drinks at DO NTHNG, so there is no need to drive elsewhere.

Day 3: Village Visit or Hot Springs, Then Departure

Enjoy a slow breakfast and check out by 10:00 AM. If your transport schedule allows, visit Vashisht or take a short local walk where conditions are safe. Leave enough time to reach your bus departure point or begin your drive. In winter, keep the final day light and avoid a long excursion before travelling.

If you have more than three days, consider Manali, the HOGS way, a 3N/4D itinerary covering Hadimba, Solang, Sissu, Soyal and Sajla, or Hidden Manali with HOGS, a 4N/5D itinerary that includes Sethan and Hamta Valley. Access and suitability are subject to current conditions, and rates are on request.

Winter Travel Safety Tips

Winter conditions in the mountains can change quickly. A flexible plan and attention to official instructions matter more than reaching every snow point.

  • Check road updates before leaving: Review official traffic and district advisories before each excursion.
  • Avoid night driving: Plan to complete mountain road sections in daylight, especially on unfamiliar routes.
  • Use snow chains only when appropriate: Check local requirements and make sure the driver knows how to fit and use them safely.
  • Watch for black ice: Slow down on shaded, wet or icy stretches and avoid sudden braking.
  • Carry cash and essentials: Network coverage and digital payments can vary outside town.
  • Keep buffer time: Allow for weather delays, road closures or changes to transport.
  • Follow local guidance at snow points: Respect barriers, parking instructions, activity rules and closures.
  • Do not take unnecessary risks for photographs: Stay away from unstable snowbanks, restricted roads and unsafe edges.

For weather, check the India Meteorological Department. For destination information, use Himachal Pradesh Tourism.
