MANALI TRAVEL GUIDES
Snowfall in Manali 2026–27: When and Where to See Snow

Snowfall in Manali usually becomes more likely from late November or December, with the strongest winter chances often falling in January and February. Snowfall in Manali town itself is never guaranteed: nearby higher areas can receive snow while the streets remain clear. If you are planning a winter break, start with the forecast and road status, then choose a flexible winter stay in Manali that gives you a comfortable base if the weather changes.
At HOGS Panorama in Prini, we see how much the experience depends on timing, altitude and road access. Here is our practical guide for the 2026–27 season. If you would rather sit out a snowy day with a hot drink, see our coffee guide.
Quick answer
Snow can arrive in Manali from late autumn into early spring, but the timing and location vary each year. Higher places around the valley generally have better chances than Manali town. January and February are often the most promising months for winter snow, while November and March are more variable.
| Month | Snow chance in Manali town | Snow chance at higher points | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | Low and variable; a late-month spell is possible | Better, depending on weather and altitude | Crisp mountain days, flexible plans |
| December | Possible, not assured | Often more promising | Winter atmosphere and festive trips |
| January | Possible; snow cover can change quickly | Usually among the better winter chances | Snow-focused trips with flexibility |
| February | Possible, especially after a fresh weather system | Often good at higher elevations | Snow outings and quieter winter days |
| March | Usually lower in town and increasingly variable | Snow may remain at higher elevations | Spring sunshine with a chance of snow up high |
When does it snow in Manali?
For Manali snowfall 2026–27, use the calendar as a guide rather than a promise. A western disturbance can bring precipitation and colder conditions, but the snowline and amount depend on the system. Forecasts become more useful closer to your travel dates.
November: Is there snow in Manali in November?
November is a shoulder month. Manali can feel distinctly cold, especially in the morning and after sunset, but snow in town is not something to plan around. The first snowfall in Manali may happen around this part of the season in some years, while other years remain dry for longer. Higher slopes may see snow earlier than the town.
If you are travelling in November, focus on mountain views, walks and a warm stay. Keep a snow excursion as a flexible extra, not the main expectation.
December: Snow in Manali in December
December brings the winter mood, shorter days and a better chance of snow than November in many seasons. Snowfall in town can happen, but a white Christmas is not guaranteed. Higher places such as Solang and routes towards the Atal Tunnel may offer a better chance of finding snow, subject to road access.
Manali weather in December can change during the day. Pack layers and allow time for delays, especially around Christmas week. For a broader seasonal itinerary, see our Manali in December guide.
January: Snow in Manali in January
January is often one of the best months to look for snow around Manali. Cold spells and fresh weather systems can bring snow to town or nearby higher areas, though conditions can also mean road restrictions. Snow cover is not continuous everywhere; a sunny day or a change in weather can alter what you find.
Manali weather in January is winter-cold, with colder conditions at higher elevations and after dark. Plan daytime outings, check local updates before leaving and avoid rushing back on icy roads.
February: Snow in Manali in February
Snow in Manali in February can be rewarding, especially when a fresh spell reaches the valley. Higher points may retain snow even when lower areas are clear. It is still a variable month: a sunny stretch can reduce snow near town, while a new system can change conditions quickly.
February is a good option for travellers who want winter scenery but can remain flexible about which snow point they visit.
March: Is March still a good time to see snow?
March is a transition month. Snowfall in Manali town becomes less dependable, but snow can remain at higher elevations, depending on the winter and recent weather. If snow is your main priority, January or February is usually a safer seasonal choice than March, though no month guarantees it.
Where to see snow near Manali
If you are wondering where to see snow near Manali, the answer often depends on the latest snowline and which roads are open. Drive times below are rough planning estimates from Manali town, not promises. Traffic, weather, checkpoints and road closures can change them significantly.
Solang Valley snow
Solang Valley is a popular first stop for visitors looking for snow activities and open mountain scenery. It is about half an hour from Manali town in good conditions. Snow presence varies by date and elevation within the valley. During heavy snowfall, traffic controls or parking restrictions may apply, and local operators may pause activities.
Atal Tunnel and Sissu in snow
The Atal Tunnel connects the Manali side with Lahaul, where Sissu may have a different snow picture from the town. Allow about 1 to 2 hours to Sissu in good conditions, but winter travel can take much longer or be restricted. Tunnel access and beyond-tunnel road conditions are controlled according to weather and safety; do not assume the route is open just because the tunnel exists.
Gulaba snow point
Gulaba is on the road towards Rohtang and can be a snow-play destination when the route is accessible. It is about 30 to 45 minutes from Manali town in good conditions. The road can be affected by snow, ice and traffic management. Follow police instructions and use authorised local transport where required.
Kothi
Kothi sits above Manali on the Rohtang route and can offer winter views and snow when conditions allow. It is about 30 to 45 minutes from town in good conditions. Access may be limited during or after snowfall, and the road can be slippery. Check whether vehicles are being allowed beyond the current control point before setting out.
Marhi
Marhi is farther up the Rohtang route and is often associated with snow excursions in accessible seasons. It can take about 1 to 2 hours from Manali town in good conditions. In winter, access is highly weather-dependent; road closures, snow clearance and vehicle restrictions may prevent travel. Do not make Marhi a fixed itinerary stop without a same-day update.
Rohtang Pass in winter
Rohtang Pass is a high mountain pass and is generally closed to regular tourist traffic during the winter season because of heavy snow and hazardous conditions. Access rules, seasonal opening and permit requirements can change. A permit does not override a closure, and no one should assume that a winter sightseeing trip to Rohtang is possible. Check official district and police notices before planning.
Hamta, Sethan and the Prini side
Hamta and Sethan are higher-area options around the valley, but winter access depends on the route, snow and local conditions. Sethan is about an hour or more from Manali town in good conditions; Hamta route timings vary by destination and road status. Prini, where HOGS Panorama is located, is on the quieter side of Manali and is a convenient base for checking conditions before choosing a day trip. Snow is not guaranteed at the property.
| Place | Rough drive from Manali | Typical access in winter | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solang Valley | About 30 minutes in good conditions | Variable; traffic controls possible | Snow play and activities |
| Atal Tunnel / Sissu | About 1 to 2 hours to Sissu in good conditions | Check tunnel and beyond-tunnel notices | Lahaul scenery and snow landscapes |
| Gulaba | About 30 to 45 minutes in good conditions | Weather- and control-point dependent | A snow outing when accessible |
| Kothi | About 30 to 45 minutes in good conditions | Can be restricted after snowfall | Views and nearby snow |
| Marhi | About 1 to 2 hours in good conditions | Often restricted in winter conditions | Higher-altitude snow, if open |
| Rohtang Pass | Not a reliable winter drive | Usually seasonally closed; permits do not guarantee access | Seasonal planning only |
| Hamta / Sethan / Prini side | Sethan about 1 hour or more in good conditions; Hamta varies | Local road and weather dependent | Flexible outings and a quieter base |
How to check the Manali snowfall forecast before you go
For a useful forecast, look at more than a generic "Manali" weather icon:
- Check the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast and warnings for Himachal Pradesh close to your dates.
- Check Himachal Pradesh Police and the district administration's road updates for closures, traffic restrictions and snow-clearance notices. Conditions can change during the day.
- Ask your hotel on WhatsApp what guests and local drivers are seeing that day. A local update can help you choose between nearby snow points, but it is not a substitute for official road instructions.
- Recheck the night before and again in the morning. Avoid treating a forecast several days ahead as confirmation of snowfall at a particular hotel or road.
Always check the road status before you set out. Roads can close, reopen and close again within a day.
Driving in snow: roads, chains and local taxis
Can you drive to Manali in snow? Sometimes, but it depends on the road, your vehicle, the driver's experience and the current restrictions. Main roads may remain open while higher routes are closed. Snow can turn to ice, particularly in shaded stretches and early mornings.
If you are not experienced with winter driving, consider a local taxi and follow the driver's advice about where to stop. Snow chains or a 4x4 may be useful or required on certain routes in particular conditions, but they do not make a closed or unsafe road passable. Confirm requirements locally; do not fit chains and continue against police directions. Keep fuel, warm clothing, water and a charged phone with you, and never park where you obstruct snow-clearing vehicles.
Snow trip ideas for couples, families and festive travellers
Manali snow trip for couples
For couples, a comfortable room and flexible daytime plans can be more enjoyable than chasing a distant snow point in poor conditions. Choose a stay with mountain views, keep one day open for a local snow outing and plan a warm evening indoors. HOGS Panorama has a Private Jacuzzi Suite with an in-room jacuzzi and mountains beyond the glass; snow outside the window is weather-dependent, not guaranteed.
Manali with kids in snow
With children, prioritise short outings, warm layers and safe places to play rather than long drives during active snowfall. Keep spare gloves and socks, take breaks indoors and avoid steep or icy slopes. Check whether activities are operating and use helmets or other safety equipment where provided. Do not let children play near roads, frozen water or snowbanks with hidden edges.

What to wear in Manali in snow
Pack for cold, wet and changing conditions rather than relying on one heavy jacket:

- Warm socks, gloves, a beanie and a scarf or neck warmer.
